James 1:22-23 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.
As the people of God, we must bear fruits that are worthy of repentance. The Lord is looking for those who will be doers of the truth, and not hearers only. When the church is in a state of hearing without doing, then the following scenario occurs in Timothy below.
Don’t Be Ever Learning, but Never Able to Come to the Knowledge of the Truth
2 Timothy 3:1-7
1This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. 6For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, 7Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Therefore, we must be those who are doing the truth and we will come to the knowledge of the truth.
Look at what Jesus teaches us…
If any man will do His (God’s) will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.
21 But he that does truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
14 You are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it gives light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
The Pharisees loved the praise of men. They loved the greetings in the markets and to be called of men, “Rabbi”. Yet Jesus isn’t looking for people who love the praise of men, but who will do God’s will.
THE REWARD OF DOING THE TRUTH
If we are those who do the truth, as Jesus said, we WILL COME TO THE LIGHT. God will pour out His Spirit upon them so they can learn more of God’s unsearchable treasures of hidden wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and mysteries. Most of all, to come to a greater understanding of who Jesus is – to know Christ, and the power of His resurrection!
20Wisdom cries without; she utters her voice in the streets: 21She cries in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she utters her words, saying, 22How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? 23Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.
7But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. 8Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,
9And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
10That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
11If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.
12Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.
DON’T GROW WEARY IN WELL-DOING
Don’t be contentious about submitting your lives to God’s word and the leading of the Holy Spirit. Be a person who obeys the truth, knowing that God will judge every man according to their works. So be a doer of the word and not hearers only!
Notice the reward that Peter, an Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ tells us about those who are diligent to add to our faith (the things we are hearing), and giving all diligent to do these things. The reward is that when we go back to the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John – you will not be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of Jesus! That’s because God gives eyes to see to DILIGENT DOERS, not just those who hear. Not only that, but a grand entrance will be given to you when Jesus comes for His sanctified saints in the rapture! Read this for yourself.
2 Peter 1:2-16
2Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, 3According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
4Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these you might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
5And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; (thinking and doing right)
and to virtue knowledge; (all scripture, and especially the gospels which reveal Jesus)
6And to knowledge temperance; (in other words, do what you know)
and to temperance patience; (be steadfast)
and to patience godliness; (focus on being Christlike)
7And to godliness brotherly kindness; (by our love all men know we are Christ’s disciples)
and to brotherly kindness love. (Read 1 Corinthians 13 to learn about God’s love)
8For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that you shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9But he that lacks these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
10Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
11For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
12Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though you know them, and be established in the present truth. 13Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;
14Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me. 15Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.
16For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
7To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:
8But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, 9Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;
10But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile
11For there is no respect of persons with God.
12For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;
13(For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.
FEAR GOD AND KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS
I John 2:3-6
3We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.
I John 5:2-3
2By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 3For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
10The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth. 11The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd. 12And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.
13Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. 14For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
Therefore, as God’s people and ministers it is critical that we be doers of God’s word and not hearers only. We must be those who hear the word of God preached by faith, and take up our cross daily and follow Jesus. As we learn to submit to the word of God, especially the teachings of Jesus, and become sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit, we will become more like Jesus in all things, which is the goal for every born-again believer of Christ.
